~ The day before making this essence, I had intended to commune with a different flower. On that day I felt a longing for community, a desire to express myself vulnerably and a readiness to feel seen and supported by others. What are Flower Essences?
My Journey with Flowers began…
long before I was consciously aware of their healing abilities. From a young age, I’ve always felt a pull towards the natural world- it was my safe haven from “regular” life and the one place I felt fully and totally understood. If I wasn’t pretending to be a fairy, I was a feral animal. (Some things never change).
Flash forward to seventeen, I studied Environmental Science at Cal Poly State University, and while I fell completely in love with California’s central coast (who wouldn’t), I found my classes to be lacking depth. From botany to dendrology- I waited to feel the spark of inspiration that initially drew me to plants but learning solely from a scientific perspective was simply not enough. I craved deeper intimacy with the material… to feel it in my body, heart and soul. I waited to hear someone articulate the emotional and spiritual connection I had been feeling so intensely but that day never came…
After graduating, I spent the next half year intensely self studying herbalism, reading every Rosemary Gladstone book I could find and healing myself naturally through more sophisticated potions than the ones I was making at seven. At one point, I packed up everything I owned and lived out of my Rav 4 deep in the redwoods of Oregon, in the pursuit of merging more closely with my plant loves.
At the end of 2023, I decided to move to New Zealand. (When my soul calls, I listen.) Without a plan, money or contacts, I headed to the land of the Long White Cloud. Six months into my journey, I found myself living with a mystic in the Marlborough Sounds, and it was there where I stumbled upon the book “Flower Essences of New Zealand”. In that moment, something deep within me clicked. You know- one of those full circle moments, like meeting a Soul Mate or listening to Sufjan Stevens for the first time- a moment where you finally experience something that had previously only existed as a feeling. In reading that book, I felt validated- at last, I had proof of the intimate connection I had been feeling with plants; a connection we all have access to.
Over the next year and a half, I began to inquire more about this world of flowers. I worked with manuka, kanuka and kawakawa in New Zealand and right before heading back to Santa Barbara, I ran into a woman who gave me the book, “Bliss and Blessings”- a book on flower essences written none other than by a renowned herbalist in Santa Barbara.
I knew a mystical journey with flowers was on the horizon… Tuning in, it was hibiscus that called me first. She came to me in dreams, in meditations and whispers whenever I saw her- So, as one does, I heeded the cryptic call towards this tropical flower and set the intention to meet her in her native home of Hawaii. As the universe will have it, that following week I was offered the opportunity to run a farm in Kauai for 5 weeks. A farm full of flowers, no less ;)
The next month spent on this powerful island was a succession of synchronic moments and divine unfolding. Each flower I worked with was an initiation, guiding me into deeper alignment and evolution. The lessons presented in my life during this process mirrored the qualities interwoven within each flower; they offered their support at just the right time, gently encouraging me towards a higher embodiment of self.
I have firsthand experienced the healing that occurs as a result of my essences (and those of other creators) and it is with overwhelming gratitude that I get to share this beautiful medicine with you.
